After long days at work, I wanted one thing: a cozy, quiet space to unwind. What I had instead was a cold, drafty patio with a roof that leaked constantly. Then a harsh winter storm hit, and I woke up to a broken roof and a serious mess. That was the moment I decided to rebuild — this time with a proper veranda that could actually handle Canadian weather.

Finding a reliable polycarbonate supplier wasn't easy. Then I found Da Vinci Plastics. Here's why their Poly Sky panels turned out to be exactly what my veranda needed.

Polycarbonate vs. Glass for a Cozy Veranda

When I started planning the veranda, the first decision was glass or polycarbonate. After some research, polycarbonate won — and it wasn't close.

Standard glass cracks and shatters under impact, and it doesn't hold up well against temperature swings. Poly Sky panels, by comparison, are built to be significantly more impact-resistant than glass, while still being lighter and easier to install. Glass is also a poor insulator and a pain to handle on your own; polycarbonate is lighter to work with, insulates better, and shrugs off hail, wind, and other severe weather.

Privacy mattered too. Glass lets in plenty of light but offers almost no privacy. Poly Sky panels let sunlight filter through while keeping the space private — the best of both.

The multiwall structure is what makes the difference here: the internal air channels trap heat, creating a natural insulating layer that keeps the veranda warmer as temperatures drop outside.

The Range Da Vinci Plastics Offers

I didn't expect this much selection. Panel sizes go from 4x8 up to 4x36, and custom cuts are available if none of the standard sizes fit.

I went with smoky 4-wall Poly Sky panels for the strength, the shade they provide, and the added privacy — the right call for a veranda.

Installation: Simpler Than I Expected

With guidance from Da Vinci Plastics, the install was straightforward. A standard utility knife or a fine-tooth saw handles the cuts without issue.

Leaking was my main concern going in, given what happened to my old roof. The fix: compatible wall flashing where the veranda meets the house, and weather-sealed screws with rubber washers to keep every panel seam watertight.

Built for Real Ontario Winters

I've had this veranda up for a few years now, and it's held up better than I expected. I'm in Barrie, Ontario — right in the Snowbelt off Lake Huron/Georgian Bay, where lake-effect squalls dump serious snow load on roofs every winter.

Every major snowstorm and windstorm since installation, the panels haven't shown a mark of damage. They're also UV-protected, so there's no yellowing or brittleness from sun exposure over the summer, and I'm shielded from UV rays while I'm out there.

The Verdict

If you're a homeowner or a contractor weighing roofing options for a patio or veranda, Da Vinci Plastics' Poly Sky polycarbonate panels are worth putting at the top of your list. Mine turned a leaking, cold patio into a space I actually want to spend time in — through every Ontario winter since.
